This letter is from a (long term) physically and emotionally abused person that has become free from the grip of that life and is building a very inspiring and emotionally sound new path.
"Dear Gui: .....
The thing about my therapy I found so good was you gave me the time and space to sort things out on my own. You gave me guidance even when I demanded direction. You gave me rope let me get just tangled enough that I could still untangle myself. Sometimes I needed to be told what to do, but even in those times, you didn't make it easy. You weren't trying to insert your strength into mine, you were helping me get strong. because then I would have been dependant on you. This is the way I want to parent. I want to guide, not direct. I want to lead from behind, not from the front. It seems like a much more rewarding way to parent.
Last night's dream analysis told me that my only obligation is to parent ( # # #). (Ex-Partner) is not my responsibility. (Ex-Partner) has her own road to travel and it's not me who needs to show her the way. Intervention, no intervention, get her off drugs or not. Until she's a clear threat to me or my daughter I'm just going to apply gentle pressure and let her learn on her own too.
I'm processing my regret fantasies. I'm beginning to come to terms with the fact any mistakes I made I needed to make. Even though they were painful and I wish I did things differently I'm beginning to accept that I needed to do everything I did to get to where I am. I'm not perfect, but so much better from where I was.
So even though I stumbled a lot, I never fell so hard that I couldn't get back up. If I can survive a (terminal illness) and an abusive relationship, then what else really is there to be afraid of?
Stumbling isn't something I should regret but something I should cherish. Stumbles give us our strength. The harder we stumble the stronger we get. I will stumble again. The difference after therapy isn't regretting the next stumble, it's appreciating the strength I get from getting back up."
Thanks to all of you out there working in the trenches and front lines of healing!!
With inspiration and hope for a healthier future for all!

To understand mental and physical illness we MUST understand the science behind Adverse Childhood Events or ACE. Our health care system need to provide an avenue to prevent and treat illnesses considering the ACE score if we want to stop the health care crisis we are suffering today. If you have suffered adversity in childhood know that you are not alone and you can heal with proper care.
How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain.
