βThe Heart & Stroke 2024 Cardiac Arrest Report unveils urgent and startling insights that demand our attention. With 25 years of dedication to life-saving education, we are compelled to highlight these critical findings to you.
π Canada faces about 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually, with a mere 10% survival rate (1 in 10).
πΌ Almost half of these cases involve people younger than 65!
β Survival rates decrease significantly with each passing minute without CPR or AED intervention.
π§ Brain damage begins after 5 minutes without oxygen.
π The rate of bystanders performing CPR in emergencies varies significantly, from 42% to 72%. However, public use of AEDs is notably low at just 13%, underscoring the critical need for greater accessibility to AEDs.
π A substantial number of cardiac arrests occur at home, suggesting the importance of having AEDs readily available in both public and private settings.
π Very few Canadians, only 4%, know that a sudden collapse can often be caused by a cardiac arrest.
π€ Also, 1 in 3 Canadians do not know the difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack, and many don't realize that cardiac arrests outside the hospital are mostly fatal.
