Resolvve Therapy
Therapy is incredible.
And I say that both as a therapist and as someone whoâs in therapy myself.
One of the reasons itâs so powerful is because most of us spend so much of life on autopilot. We stop examining ourselves. We normalize things that actually deeply affect us.
Sometimes in session someone casually mentions, âyeah I usually donât eat until 6pm because of my ADHD medication,â and then suddenly it hits both of us. Wait. Youâre basically starving yourself most of the day. No wonder you feel burnt out or irritable.
And the person often says, âI never even thought about that.â
Thatâs part of the gift of therapy. Not just advice. Awareness.
You start hearing your own life out loud with another person paying attention beside you. Things you already knew somewhere deep down suddenly become visible.
And that visibility creates the possibility for change.
ERP does not need to move so slowâŚERP doesnât always need to move at a snailâs pace â and sometimes going too slow actually reinforces the very avoidance itâs trying to treat. đ§ Thereâs a difference between a therapist carefully discerning what a client can handle, and a clientâs OCD convincing them that bigger steps arenât possible. Donât let the exposure ladder become its own avoidance strategy. You can handle more than OCD is telling you. đ
Ending therapy sessions on time is harder than it sounds đ
As a therapist, I struggle with it too. Itâs the same dynamic I work on with my clients â setting boundaries, saying no even when youâre worried about the other personâs reaction.
When I let a session run over, I tell myself the client will feel more validated. The truth? Itâs my own discomfort Iâm managing.
Two things that helped:
Start on time. One minute late and Iâm compensating with four extra.
At 45 minutes, say it out loud: âWeâre coming to the end â anything we need to make sure we cover?â Note it, open with it next session. Nothing gets lost.
End on time. Youâll feel less resentful, youâll model boundaries for your clients, and youâll have space to breathe.
Our clients have work to do. So do we.
