*Ascites* in broilers, also known as "water belly," is a serious condition where fluid builds up in the abdomen due to right heart failure, often triggered by high metabolic rates from rapid growth and insufficient oxygen *from factors like poor ventilation or high altitude*. It's characterized by a distended abdomen, labored breathing, and can lead to high mortality, with causes *linked to rapid growth, cold stress, respiratory issues, and dietary imbalances, requiring management through slower growth, better environment, and respiratory health control*

*Causes & Triggers*

Rapid Growth: High-energy diets and fast growth rates increase oxygen demand beyond supply.

Pulmonary Hypertension: Increased pressure in lung blood vessels forces the right heart to work harder, eventually failing.

Environmental Stress: Poor ventilation, high ammonia, cold stress (causing huddling), or high altitude (low oxygen).

Respiratory Diseases: Pneumonia or other issues reduce oxygen exchange.

Dietary Factors: High sodium, high energy, or poor nutrient balance.

*Signs & Symptoms*
Distended abdomen (water belly).
Labored breathing, gasping.
Bluish skin/flesh (cyanosis).
Lethargy, reduced activity.
Sudden deaths, often in older birds (3-5 weeks).

*Prevention & Management*

Slower Growth: Use lower nutrient density feeds or implement early-age feed/light restriction.

Environmental Control: Maintain optimal temperature (avoid cold stress/panting), humidity, and excellent ventilation (reduce ammonia/dust).

Disease Prevention: Control respiratory infections.
