Friendship Bench - Zimbabwe

As we continue commemorating Mental Health Awareness Month this May, we remain committed to strengthening community mental health systems through collaboration and partnership. 💚

This month, we successfully held a sensitisation meeting with Bulawayo City Council Mental Health Nurses from 3 districts to strengthen referral pathways and enhance mental health service delivery at primary healthcare level. The meeting brought together key stakeholders including the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer, the Provincial Mental Health Officer and the Deputy Mental Health Officer.

Together, we explored ways to improve coordinated care for clients and strengthen access to quality mental health support within communities.

One of our incredible Friendship Bench grandmothers, Gogo Sheba proudly stood alongside the team to receive the KBF Africa Prize. For years, our grandmothers have offered a listening ear, created safe spaces and gave hope to over a million people across communities in Zimbabwe.

Seeing their work recognised on an international stage is a celebration of compassion, resilience and the impact of human connection. This moment belongs to every grandmother who continues to change lives, one conversation at a time.
