Google is offering millions of Windows users a free way to keep their old PCs useful by letting them replace Windows with ChromeOS Flex, a lightweight operating system designed for older laptops and desktops. It’s being pushed especially hard because Windows 10 support is ending, which means many older computers won’t qualify for Windows 11 and could be left outdated or less secure.
Here’s how it works: users can install ChromeOS Flex for free on eligible PCs or Macs using a USB installer. Google says the device should generally have an Intel or AMD 64-bit processor, at least 4GB RAM, and 16GB of storage, and it can be installed by creating a bootable USB and replacing the old operating system. Google and Back Market are also promoting a low-cost USB kit to make the process easier for people who don’t want to build the installer themselves.
The reason Google is doing this is simple: there are hundreds of millions of older Windows machines that still work fine physically, but are being pushed toward obsolescence by software requirements. ChromeOS Flex is Google’s way of saying you may not need a new PC at all… you may just need a new operating system.
