Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that is passed down from parents to their children. It is caused by a change in the hemoglobin gene, which is responsible for making the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells.
Red blood cells that have sickle cell disease change from soft to sticky and resemble the "sickle," a C-shaped farm implement. These sickle-shaped cells are more likely to clump together and block blood vessels, which can lead to a variety of symptoms, including pain, anemia, and organ damage.
