Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Leading cause of infertility and ectopic pregnancy
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
is a polymicrobial infection of the upper ge***al tract associated with the s*xually transmitted organisms N gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis.
As well as endogenous organisms, including anaerobes, Haemophilus influenzae, enteric gram-negative rods, and streptococci.
It is most common in young, s*xually active women with multiple partners and is a leading cause of infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
The use of barrier methods (Condom) of contraception may provide significant protection.
Symptoms and Signs
Patients with PID may have lower abdominal pain, chills and fever, menstrual disturbances, purulent cervical discharge, and adnexal tenderness.
Treatment:
Early treatment with appropriate antibiotics effective against N gonorrhoeae, C trachomatis, and the endogenous organisms listed above is essential to prevent long-term sequelae.
The s*xual partner should be examined and treated appropriately.
