MICROWAVE TUMOR ABLATION

Microwave tumor ablation (MWA) is a highly specialized and minimally invasive medical procedure that uses microwaves to eliminate cancer cells by generating intense heat. The procedure involves inserting a tiny antenna directly into the tumor. Precise placement of a thin probe or antenna within the tumor is achieved using imaging guidance techniques such as CT scan or ultrasound.

The antenna emits microwaves, a type of electromagnetic radiation, which pe*****te the surrounding tissue and cause rapid molecular-level vibrations in the tumor cells. This vibration generates friction, resulting in the production of intense heat. As a result, the cancer cells within the targeted area are effectively destroyed.

MWA is primarily used to treat primary liver tumors, although it can also be used to manage other types of tumors located in various areas, including liver cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, and early-stage bone tumors.

PERFORMING THE PROCEDURE

The MWA procedure is typically performed by an interventional radiologist, a medical professional with extensive expertise in using imaging techniques to guide minimally invasive procedures. The interventional radiologist works closely with other healthcare professionals, such as oncologists and nurses, to ensure the successful ex*****on of the treatment plan.

TRANS-ARTERIAL CHEMOEMBOLIZATION & ITS BENEFITS

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat tumours, most commonly in the liver. It combines two powerful techniques to deliver a targeted attack on cancer cells: chemotherapy delivery and blocking the blood supply. Anti-cancer drugs are delivered directly to the tumour through a catheter inserted into an artery feeding the tumour. Small particles are used to block the blood flow to the tumour. This traps the chemotherapy drugs within the tumor and cuts off its blood supply, starving it of oxygen and nutrients.

• Inoperable Tumours: TACE can be an option for tumors that are too large or inoperable with surgery.

WHO PERFORMS TACE PROCEDURE

TACE is a complex procedure that requires expertise in navigating catheters through blood vessels using fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray imaging). Interventional Radiologists have extensive training and experience in performing these types of minimally invasive procedures. An understanding of the intricate network of blood vessels is crucial for successfully navigating the catheter to the tumour site and ensuring accurate delivery of the chemotherapy drugs. Interventional radiologists possess a deep understanding of vascular anatomy. The embolization part of TACE requires knowledge in placing and deploying embolic materials to block blood flow to the tumour, which Interventional Radiologists are highly skilled in performing embolization procedures.

This meaningful event aimed to raise awareness about mental health issues and promote well-being among the community. The walk was conducted under the inspiring theme: "Experiencing the Difference," highlighting the importance of mental health in our daily lives.
