A heart breaking story is unfolding in Mutare as Witness Mavambire takes Exclusive Medcare Hospital to the High Court. His 75 year old mother, Marita Manyore, was cleared for discharge on February 14, but the hospital refuses to let her leave until a US$2,200 bill is paid in full.

Mavambire describes his mother being used as a human lien. Despite paying what he could, the bill continues to skyrocket every day she is held there even though she isn’t receiving further treatment.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) have stepped in, arguing that detaining a patient over debt is a violation of the Constitution.
