In Mahenye Ward 29, Chipinge District, the Safe Space Dialogue revealed a painful truth: our rural Shangaan community, nestled at the edge of Gonarezhou National Park and Mozambique, remains unheard in times of crisis. The Lisungwe floods showed us that rescue alone is not enough—without timely information, lives are left vulnerable. Yet the current community radio does not serve the indigenous Shangani people, leaving them without the lifeline of early warnings and vital disaster updates. Women, youth, and elders spoke with one voice: Zimbabwe’s Civil Protection Act must be modernized to protect women, strengthen rapid response, and build resilience. Community radios must amplify all grassroots voices, not silence them. As Green Institute, we stand with Mahenye Village in calling for inclusive communication platforms and stronger partnerships so that no community is left behind when disaster strikes.
