In many parts of Zimbabwe around 2007, education was still widely seen as one of the strongest paths to a better life, especially because of the country’s economic struggles at the time. Many girls absolutely still dreamed of excelling in school, becoming teachers, nurses, lawyers, accountants, doctors, or simply finding stability and respect through education.
Families often pushed the idea that:
“School is the key to success.”
Good grades could help someone leave poverty behind.
Education could bring opportunities outside the township or rural area.
For girls especially, doing well in school was sometimes also viewed as:
a way to gain independence,
avoid early marriage or hardship,
and support their families in the future.
At the same time, not every girl had the same experience. Some faced pressure from poverty, family responsibilities, teenage pregnancy, migration, or lack of school fees during Zimbabwe’s economic crisis years. So while many had strong dreams academically, circumstances sometimes interrupted those ambitions.
