Zim considers widening its list of banned imports

The Zimbabwean government is reportedly considering widening the list of products prohibited from being imported into the country, if news reports out of the country are to be believed.

The Harare-based Financial Gazette newspaper cited the country’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Chiratidzo Mabuwa, as saying that new controls were necessary to nurse a growing list of failing industries, thrown into crisis by a switch in consumer preferences towards cheap imported products.

In June, government issued Statutory Instrument (SI) 64 of 2016, which banned the importation of 42 products, sparking riots at the Beitbridge border.

The riots were instigated by cross-border traders in Zimbabwe and retailers in South Africa, whose livelihoods were impacted by the protectionist policy.

"We are still looking for more items so that we have another SI to protect our market. We want to lubricate the local market so that you increase your capacity utilisation and productivity and make money. Then you will lubricate the fiscus," she reportedly said.

State-owned newspaper, The Herald, quoted Mabuwa as telling a Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce conference last week that further import bans would close the country's trade deficit and “prevent foreign competitors from dumping sub-standard products in the country”.
