Story by transforming North western.

Reports from Kikonge Gold Mine in Mufumbwe District, North-Western Province, indicate that nearly 95 percent of women in the area were pushed into s*x work due to poverty, lawlessness, and harsh living conditions associated with illegal mining activities.

Several former illegal miners shared their emotional and heartbreaking stories with the Transforming North-Western Province page, highlighting abuse, health risks, family breakdowns, and loss of dignity.

They expressed deep gratitude to the Government for decisively closing the illegal site and relocating miners, saying the intervention has restored peace, safety, social order, and renewed hope for sustainable livelihoods and community development.

The project was made possible through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and the community has expressed sincere gratitude to the government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Previously, the old mortuary frequently broke down, forcing families to transport deceased relatives to Kasempa or Manyinga. The new mortuary has increased capacity and modern facilities, greatly improving mortuary services and easing the burden on families in Mufumbwe District.
