A 54-YEAR-OLD man in Luwingu District has died after allegedly accidentally shooting himself with a homemade firearm while on a hunting expedition.
The incident happened on Monday around 22:00 hours at Chunda village under Chief Shimumbi area.
Northern Province deputy commanding officer Charles Mbita has identified the now deceased as Joseph Kabwe of Mucheleka village in Chief Chipalo’s area.
Dr Mbita said Paul Mapanda 58 reported that his nephew Kabwe died after accidentally shooting himself with a homemade firearm while he had gone hunting with his friend, David Bwalya 27.
“A 54-year-old man in Luwingu district has died after accidentally shooting himself with a homemade firearm while on a hunting expedition, “he said.
He said on the material day, the now deceased was carrying a short homemade gun while his friend Bwalya was armed with a catapult, bow and arrow and a machete.
Dr Mbita said the duo later separated while hunting in different directions.
He said shortly afterwards, Bwalya reportedly heard a gunshot followed by cries for help from Kabwe.
“When he rushed to the scene, he found Kabwe lying on the ground bleeding from the left leg and he informed him that he had accidentally shot himself after falling down causing the firearm to discharge,” Dr Mbita said.
Dr Mbita said Kabwe died on the way to the hospital due to excessive bleeding and police later conducted a physical inspection on the body and observed a severely broken left leg consistent with a gunshot injury.
