INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2026

On this year’s International Women’s Day, celebrated under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” the Zambia Climate Change Network joins the world in recognizing the strength, resilience, and leadership of women, especially those in rural communities who are on the frontline of climate change.

Across Zambia, rural women play a vital role in protecting the environment and sustaining livelihoods. As farmers, seed keepers, water collectors, and caregivers, they experience the direct impacts of climate change such as droughts that in turn lead to poor harvests. Despite these challenges, women continue to lead solutions by adopting sustainable farming methods such as AGROECOLOGY, conserving natural resources, and supporting their families and communities.

Through our work with communities across the country, we have witnessed firsthand how women are championing agroecology and other local climate adaptation practices. Women’s knowledge of indigenous seeds, soil management, and biodiversity conservation is key to building resilient food systems and ensuring food security.

However, many women still face barriers such as limited access to land, climate information, finance, and decision-making spaces. Achieving rights, justice, and action means ensuring that women and girls have equal opportunities to participate in climate policies, community leadership, and national decision-making processes.

ZCCN continues to work with women’s groups, civil society partners, and government institutions to promote gender-responsive climate policies, climate justice, sustainable agriculture, and inclusive climate governance. Empowering women is not only about equality, it is essential for building resilient communities and a sustainable future.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we call for stronger action to support and invest in women and girls. When women are empowered, communities become stronger, food systems become more resilient, and climate solutions become more sustainable.

Together, let us advance Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.
