Upgraded credit rating of CCC+ still junk

Standard & Poor's (S&P), a global rating agency has upgraded Zambia's credit rating. However, the upgrade is minimal and the country still remains in what is called junk status.

Any upgrade is welcome and a notable development for Zambia. But one thing the country should not forget is that the upgrade is still within junk status.

There should be a clear plan to communicate what actions would be taken and timelines needed to get out of the junk status (below investment grade) for Zambia.

Finance Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane and his team have been working on this for over four years now. At this pace, Zambia still has a long way to go to cross the redline to make the country be viewed at investment grade.

The jury is still out if this pace of upgrade and reform is the best or more could be done to fastract progress...
