Brian owned a growing electronics shop in Kitwe.
Business was good.
He had a website.
He accepted mobile money.
He stored customer data.
He believed one thing: “We are too small to be hacked.”
One Monday morning, that belief collapsed.
Staff couldn’t access the system. The screen displayed a message:
"Your files have been encrypted. Pay within 72 hours."
Customer records were locked.
Sales history was gone.
Suppliers couldn’t be paid.
The attackers were not targeting big banks in Lusaka.
They were targeting small businesses like his across Zambia.
Brian refused to pay the ransom. But restoring operations cost him more than he imagined:
• IT forensic experts
• System restoration
• Legal consultation
• Customer notification
• Business downtime
• Reputation damage
He survived — but barely.
That is when he learned about something he had ignored before:
Cybersecurity Insurance.
What Is Cybersecurity Insurance?
It is financial protection for businesses when cyber incidents happen.
Because it’s no longer a question of if you’ll be attacked —
it’s when.
What It Covers
Depending on the policy, it can help with:
• Data breach response costs
• Ransomware recovery
• Legal fees
• Regulatory penalties
• Business interruption losses
• Customer compensation
• Digital forensic investigations
Without it, one serious breach can close a business permanently.
Why Zambian Businesses Must Take This Seriously
Many businesses think:
“We are too small.”
“We don’t store that much data.”
“Our IT guy will handle it.”
But today:
• Even a salon uses online payments.
• Even a school stores digital student records.
• Even a small shop uses POS systems.
Digital risk has entered every sector.
Cybersecurity insurance does not replace security controls —
it strengthens your resilience.
You still need:
• Strong access controls
• Employee awareness training
• Regular backups
• Updated systems
• Incident response plans
Insurance is your financial shield when your technical shield fails.
Brian rebuilt his systems.
He trained his staff.
He invested in stronger security.
And this time — he added cyber insurance.
Because smart business owners don’t just prevent risk.
They prepare for it.
In today’s digital Zambia, cyber protection is not optional.
It is business survival.
