How does someone end up living inside a wooden box? 😳📦
This haunting photograph, taken in Mongolia in July 1913, shows a woman confined inside a crate barely larger than her own body.
Only her head and one arm could reach through the openings. Heavy chains secured the structure. Around her stretched an open landscape with no walls, no prison cells, and no way to escape the reality of her situation.
Small bowls sat beside the crate, reportedly providing minimal food and water. According to accounts that have accompanied the image for generations, the woman had been given an extremely harsh punishment that left her fate uncertain. 🥀
The photograph was captured by French photographer Stéphane Passet during his travels across Mongolia. More than a century later, it remains one of the most unsettling images from the region’s early modern history.
There is no visible struggle in the frame. No guards. No crowd.
Just a woman, a wooden crate, and a moment frozen in time. ⏳
Most photographs preserve events.
This one preserved a fate. 💔
