Top Tips for Visiting Victoria Falls at Any Time of Year
Victoria Falls is spectacular year-round. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya The Smoke That Thunders its power and beauty change with the seasons, making every visit unique.
Base Yourself in Livingstone
Livingstone, Zambia, is the ideal gateway to Victoria Falls, with an international airport and accommodation options ranging from luxury lodges to backpacker hostels and self-catering apartments.
Check Visa Requirements
Before travelling, confirm current visa requirements with a Livingstone-based lodge or travel agent. Many visitors cross into Zimbabwe or Botswana, so the correct visa is essential. Carry US dollars in cash for border payments.
Choose the Right Time of Year
August to December (low water): Best for rafting, Devil’s Pool, Livingstone Island, and clearer views of the Falls.
January to June (high water): Expect dramatic spray, thunderous sound, and full immersion in mist. Full moon periods during peak flow may offer the rare chance to see a lunar rainbow.
Explore Different Viewpoints
See the Falls from multiple angles walk the Zambian trails, cross the Knife Edge Bridge, hike to the Boiling Pot, visit Livingstone Island, or take a helicopter or microlight flight for a breathtaking aerial view. The Victoria Falls Bridge also offers incredible views and adrenaline activities.
Pack Smart
Wear sunscreen, a hat, and quick-drying clothes. During high water, expect to get soaked. Use dry bags or waterproof phones, and avoid carrying food, as monkeys and baboons are common in the park.
No matter when you visit, Victoria Falls delivers an unforgettable experience powerful, humbling, and truly timeless.
