The 3D Print Design Competition is a national competition which forms part of the annual Rapid Product Development Association of South Africa (RAPDASA) conference. The competition is aimed at encouraging designers, entrepreneurs, engineers & artists to use the latest technology to promote awareness of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and attempts to gauge the country’s capability to design and engineer for AM.
With the industrialization of AM in mind, the 2021 design competition looks to break away from the norm by doing away with specific categories. Given that AM allows for the manufacture of greatly complex geometries, the challenge is to re-design one of the following components
Computer Mouse | Hydraulic Manifold | Vehicle Suspension Bracket

Judging Criteria:
All entries will be judged according to a score card MATRIX and points will be awarded against each of the following criteria:
Novelty
Inventiveness
Functionality
Aesthetic appeal
Engineering principles
3D Printing knowledge
3D Printability
Creativity
Designs may incorporate multiple components. Designs may also be made up of components which require post processing and assembly afterwards.
In the event of a draw, points will be awarded to the quality of the presentation and supportive documentation.
General Considerations:
When designing it is important to take into account the material which will used to print your design, as well as the limitations of the AM process. Factors such structural integrity and durability affect how well a design is able to function, while efficient use of material must be considered to reduce costs and to avoid over-designed components.

Wohlers Talk » A Name 18+ Years Later In April 2003, this two-paragraph blog post discussed the name of the process used to produce parts additively. Back then, most people used the term “rapid prototyping” to describe this process. It was far from perfect, as stated in the blog post, but it worked reasonably well for many years.
