When a group starts, it can feel like a collection of individuals, each person bringing their own story, their own way of seeing things. But over time, something shifts. Connections form. Perspectives expand. One person’s insight opens something for another. What felt separate starts to interweave.

As facilitators, there’s a moment when you realise you’re no longer holding a group of individuals, you’re witnessing something much bigger taking shape. Possibility grows in that space. Far beyond what any one person could have created alone.

Anyone who has worked in a group knows those moments, the ones that are difficult to explain but impossible to miss.

A shift happens. Conversations soften.

People who were once guarded begin to lean in. Even disagreement can settle into something more human, more understanding. These moments don’t happen by accident. They emerge when people feel safe enough to put down their defences, even briefly, and show up more honestly. At OTGrow, we hold space for that risk because when it happens, something powerful comes through. And it’s often in those moments that real connection begins to take shape again.

Crafts in groups can be so much more than a completed product.

In the final episode of our OTGrow series on using crafts in groups, Louise brings the series together and reflects on how crafts can be used as meaningful and effective therapeutic tools in occupational therapy group work.

Throughout the series, we returned to three important questions:

- Where is the therapeutic intervention?
- Where is the group intervention?
- What goal are we trying to achieve?

This final episode recaps how crafts can be used to support specific skills, strengthen group cohesion, facilitate team process, and create space for creative process through the Model of Creative Ability.

It also reminds us to consider the wider context when selecting craft activities: the group, the community, the culture, and the purpose of the intervention.

We would love to hear from you:
What stood out for you in this series?
Has anything shifted in the way you think about using crafts in groups?
