*Update :
Unfortunately things did not go as planned and she did not receive het titanium hip on the 2nd of May. They replaced the cement spacer with a second spacer and did a biopsy to send to the lab. After two weeks of laying in hospital, unable to move at all, they found the same bacteria once again.
She has since then been transferred to another hospital, to a new specialist, who is going to completely remove her spacer and replace it with a cleaning system, that is constantly going to flush out the area and try and get rid of the bacteria - leaving her without a hip for 14 days*
Hi all, this is our mom, Ria Strauss. She has been struggling with her Hip for many years but was never able to have it attended to. We managed to get her on medical aid, and after a long waiting period, she finally had a total hip replacement on the right side.
Due to complications and a horrible infection caused by a drip in her hand, she contracted septicaemia in hospital. This has caused a nightmare that seems to have no end in sight yet. An operation that should have improved her quality of life has caused her immense pain and anguish as one operation has now turned into five and counting.
The procedures have gone as follows:
The 1st operation to replace the Hip.
2nd operation was to clean the infection in her left hand caused by a drip not being placed in her vein.
A 3rd operation to close the septic hand.
A 4th operation for cleaning out the Hip as the infection that started in her hand had now spread to her Hip, and the process was to check and clean out the wound. Unfortunately, the infection did not want to go away and even after numerous courses of antibiotics, the infection count only got worse.
The 5th operation had the worst possible outcome. They had to remove her titanium hip entirely and replace it with a solid cement hip filled with antibiotics to fight off this infection.
This has resulted in her being bedridden at the moment for eight weeks and counting (since the 24th of February to date). After all the above, she is scheduled to go back into the theatre for a new antibiotic hip on the 2nd of May 2022 to fight off the last of the infection.
If all goes well and the infection is completely cleared up, she will qualify for a 2nd titanium hip replacement in May 2022. We are looking at seven operations for my mother to have an everyday life again.
We are praying that the operations that are still lying ahead will be the last and that they will only aid her in her recovery process to live her best life in the future. Due to the above circumstances, the medical aid and gap cover cannot pay all the outstanding medical costs because one operation has now turned into many.
We are also not financially able to cover more of these bills and were hoping for you, the reader, to extend your generosity to us. We did not prepare for all these extra costs and needed a little help, as you can imagine. There is a shortfall of 204,802.80, which will only increase due to the future operations that she will be needing.
We will be forever grateful if you can find it in your heart to assist us with a donation toward these outstanding bills!
