What is Email spoofing?

E-mail spoofing is the forgery of an email address so that the message appears to have originated from someone other than the actual source. Spammer often use spoofing in an attempt to get recipients to open, and respond to their emails, which in return lures it's victim into a trap.

Many business owners and individuals are falling for this misleading spoofed mails in tinking it might come from someone you know. It could be a simple email from Your CEO saying "Hi John, how are you? Please let me know if you're available to process a transfer?". As soon as you engage you are a victim and you easily respond and make payment only to realise later that you are being scammed.

Most of us know a spam mail when we see it, but seeing a strange email from someone you know might be a bit disconcerning. Spoofing emails is surprisingly easy, and part of why phising is such a problem.

Most mail servers can verify the IP address are authorized to send on behalf a specific domain.This is called the Sender Policy framework.

This works by checking the email send from [email protected] originates from an IP address specified in the Domain Name Services (DNS) is a from a authorised IP address. If the email [email protected] is from an unknown IP other than specified in DNS, the mail will be rejected.

How to Protect youself?

1. Use a Spam Filter.
2. Learn how to read message headers, and trace IP addresses.
3. Never click unknown links or download unfirmiliar attachments.
4. if you manage your own email, consider using a SPF record for your domain.
