Pilates was designed as a full-body method that can be practised on the mat or on spring-assisted apparatus, with the whole body working together rather than in isolation.
In Mat Pilates, you are working with your own body weight, which means your core, control, alignment and body awareness have to do the heavy lifting.
It may look simple on paper, but it is never “easy” when it is done properly.
The Reformer adds another layer.
Joseph Pilates developed apparatus to support and challenge the body, and the springs create resistance that can assist, refine or intensify a movement depending on how it is used.
That is exactly why it can feel supportive and demanding at the same time.
Mat and Reformer are not competing with each other - they work together.
Mat builds the foundation, while the Reformer gives you feedback, variation and progression, so you can develop strength and control from different angles.
So, which should you do?
