Project Overview

Living Treasures of Bophirima is a transformative cultural heritage initiative dedicated to the preservation, documentation, and celebration of the Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) of the Batswana people in the North West Province. Anchored at the historic Tlholego Eco Village, this initiative works to safeguard oral traditions, arts, music, architecture, food systems, and customary practices passed down through generations by Setswana elders and custodians.

The project ultimately culminates in the production of a book and a documentary, built on community-driven research and storytelling.

Position Overview: Field Workers (x40)

We are seeking 40 committed and community-rooted individuals residing in the North West Province to serve as Field Workers. Selected individuals will contribute to the preservation of Batswana heritage by conducting local research and documentation in their own villages, towns, or districts.

Key Responsibilities

Engage with local elders, traditional practitioners, knowledge holders and the broader community.

Conduct interviews and collect stories related to:

*Oral histories
*Language and indigenous knowledge
*Traditional music and instruments
*Indigenous food and natural products
*Local biodiversity (plants, medicine and animal life)
*Customary arts, crafts, and design
*Rites of passage and ceremonial practices
*Traditional architecture and built environments

Submit weekly reports in the form of:

*Written documentation
*Images/photographs
*Voice recordings
*Video Content

Collaborate with the central Data Collector to ensure consistency, accuracy, and archiving of materials.

Who Should Apply?

*Residents of the North West Province
*Passionate about cultural preservation and storytelling
*Familiar with their community's cultural practices and elders
*Able to communicate effectively in Setswana (preferred) and/or English
*Able to apply basic documentation and reporting methods
*Responsible and capable of working independently
*Have access to a smart phone (images and recordings) and a laptop for reporting

Support & Training

Selected field workers will receive:
A 1-day training workshop introducing them to ethical research practices, oral history methodology, and digital documentation tools.
Ongoing support from the project’s core team including the Project Manager, Head Researcher, Administrator and Data Collector.

Stipend & Commitment

Monthly stipend: R1,700 (for 4 months)
Expected time commitment: 18-20 hours per week
