TIA joined the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, at the pre-launch media briefing for the inaugural National Science Month (NSM) – South Africa's first month-long science engagement initiative.
Launching on 4 July 2026 at the Vaal University of Technology, NSM marks a significant step towards opening science, technology and innovation to all sectors, including business, academia, government and civil society, encouraging them to drive theme-related initiatives that promote STEM careers and innovation literacy.
TIA Board Chairperson Loyiso Tyira attended the briefing supported by TIA CEO Dr Titus Mathe, reaffirming TIA's commitment to building a science-aware, science-literate South Africa and strengthening the National System of Innovation.
When a young entrepreneur completes a TIA programme, the relationship does not end it deepens. TIA’s post-alumni support model is built on a belief that the period after a programme is often when innovators need the most help: to find follow-on funding, scale a pilot, and connect with the right partners.
Thirty of TIA’s investees participated alongside external applicants. GrooveTech was selected as one of five winners globally and received R2.3 million in funding. GrooveTech’s innovation transforms recycled plastic waste into polymer-modified bitumen for road construction and is now being piloted by the City of Tshwane.
From a community innovator to an international competition winner to a City of Tshwane pilot partner: that is the journey TIA’s post-alumni ecosystem makes possible. And it is not just one story. TIA’s post-acceleration support system has engaged more than 300 alumni, run pitching events across five provinces, and recommended over R48 million in follow-on funding to the innovators who are ready for the next step. This Youth Month, we say this clearly: your programme graduation is not the end. With TIA, it is the beginning.
