Salmon Makhubela Attains PhD in Information Science
The Department of Information Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA) proudly congratulates Dr Salmon Makhubela on attaining his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Information Science. He graduated during the university's graduation ceremony held at the UNISA Main Campus on 30 June 2026. Dr Makhubela serves as a lecturer in the Department of Information Science, where he has made significant contributions to teaching, research, and community engagement.
His doctoral thesis, titled "An Inter-Departmental Framework for Records Management in Support of Criminal Justice in South Africa," was completed under the supervision of Professor Mpho Ngoepe. The study contributes to strengthening records management practices across government departments and highlights the critical role of information governance in supporting an effective criminal justice system in South Africa.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Dr Makhubela offered words of encouragement to postgraduate students pursuing their own research aspirations.
"The journey may seem long, with many hills and intimidating obstacles. You may ask yourself whether you have enough resources for the journey, feel weary, doubt yourself, and sometimes even consider turning back or giving up. You may feel lonely and believe that you have no support at all. Let me assure you—you are not alone."
He further encouraged students to remain focused and persevere despite challenges.
"You may feel that the support is not enough, or that there is no support at all. Let me tell you that the support is there, and the resources you have will carry you throughout the journey. It may simply be that you are at a point far from the water station and the people who will cheer you on. Keep your head high, keep going, and remain focused on the ultimate goal. Victory is certain—just keep going. Yes, you can do it."
The Department of Information Science extends its heartfelt congratulations to Dr Makhubela on this outstanding academic achievement and wishes him continued success in his academic career, research endeavours, and service to the university and the broader information science profession.
