As the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season nears its conclusion, the race for the Golden Boot is heating up with players vying for the title of South Africa's top goal scorer.

With just a few matches left, the battle for bragging rights is intense.

Last season, Orlando Pirates' Tshegofatso Mabasa finished as the top scorer with 16 goals, but this time, it seems unlikely that anyone will come close to breaking the all-time PSL record of 25 goals, held by Zambia's Collins Mbesuma.

That record was set back in the 2004/05 season during his time with Kaizer Chiefs.

So, who will emerge as the Golden Boot winner in the 2024/25 season? Here’s a look at the top goal scorers as of 28 April 2025:

Lucas Ribeiro Costa (Mamelodi Sundowns) – 13 goals
Iqraam Rayners (Mamelodi Sundowns) – 9 goals
Dzenan Zajmovic (TS Galaxy) – 8 goals
The race is still very much alive, and while Costa is leading with a solid 13 goals, Rayners and Zajmovic are not far behind.

There are also several players tied for 4th with 6 goals, including the familiar name of Peter Shalulile from Mamelodi Sundowns, Devin Titus of Stellenbosch FC, and Sinoxolo Kwayiba from Chippa United, among others.

The competition for the top spot is fierce, and the final few games will be crucial in determining the winner.

Meanwhile, a pack of players sits with 5 goals each, including Ashley Cupido, Victor Letsoalo, Etiosa Ighodaro, Gabadinho Mhango, and even Chiefs' Wandile Duba, all eager to make their mark as the season draws to a close.

Sundowns edge past Al Ahly on away goals to reach TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final

Mamelodi Sundowns clinched a dramatic spot in the final of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after holding Al Ahly to a 1-1 draw in Cairo on Friday night, progressing on the away goals rule.

After a tense 0-0 stalemate in the first leg in Pretoria, it was Al Ahly who drew first blood in the return leg at the Cairo International Stadium.

Taher Mohamed fired the hosts into the lead midway through the first half, smashing home from outside the box after being teed up by the lively Emam Ashour.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, Al Ahly dominated much of the first period and looked on course to finally break their winless streak against the South Africans.

But Mamelodi Sundowns showed their resilience and turned the tie on its head in the closing stages.

With ten minutes remaining, a low cross caused panic in the Ahly defence, resulting in Yasser Ibrahim inadvertently turning the ball into his own net under pressure from Peter Shalulile.

It was a heartbreaking moment for the Egyptian giants and a lifeline for Sundowns, who knew a 1-1 draw would be enough to see them through.

Al Ahly threw everything forward in search of a late winner, with substitutes Achraf Bencharki and Wessam Abou Ali both going close in a frantic finale.

But Sundowns, marshalled superbly by their backline and aided by a bit of fortune, held firm to seal a famous qualification.

It marks a significant milestone for Pretoria-based side, who have now gone nine consecutive matches unbeaten against the record African champions.

Sundowns’ reward is a place in the final, where they will face either Pyramids FC or Orlando Pirates — with the second semi-final set to be decided later.

For Al Ahly, it was a night of bitter disappointment despite their brave efforts, as their dream of a record-extending CAF Champions League title came to a crashing halt at home.

Orlando Pirates failed to advance to the CAF Champions League final after losing 3-2 to Pyramids in the second leg of the semi-final on Friday night.

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro made a couple changes from the first leg last weekend as Patrick Maswanganyi dropped to the bench, with Thapelo Xoki introduced to bolster the defence while Evidence Makgopa was also recalled.

The Buccaneers pushed for a lively start and managed to carve out a couple big chances, with Makgopa and Makhehleni Makhaula failing to capitilise on their openings in the 18-yard area inside th opening 15 minutes.

Pyramids, meanwhile, struggled to get their foot on the ball in the first half, which was reminiscent of how they performed in the first leg last weekend.

The opening goal did fall to the away side five minutes before the halftime break as Xoki's header fell kindly to the feet of Relebohile Mofokeng, who sent a first-time volley into the bottom corner.

Pirates' lead did not last too long as Pyramids restored parity in first-half stoppage time when Fiston Mayele turned home a cross from Mostafa Fathi at the near post with his seventh goal in the Champions League this campaign.

Pirates needed just six minutes to restore their lead in the second half when the young Nkota picked up the ball 20 yards and rifled the ball into the far corner.

However, the Buccaneers went to sleep just as they did in the first half after Pyramids equalised for a second time in the 57th minute as Mohamed Chibi did well to pick out substitute Ramadan Sobhi, who sent a fine header past Chaine.

The hosts continued to push for another goal, with Mayele going close on 67 minutes with a close-range header that forced Chaine into a fine reflex save on the line before the Pirates defence were able to clear.

Riveiro responded by refreshing his stall with 15 minutes left on the clock as Thalente Mbatha and Nkota made way for Kabelo Dlamini and Patrick Maswanganyi to see out the rest of the encounter.

However, Pyramids completed the turnaround with six minutes left on the clock when Mayele showed quick reactions to pounce on the rebound and fire past Chaine, who had initially saved Sodiq Ougola's header.

Pyramids advance to their first-ever Champions League final, where they will face Mamelodi Sundowns.
