📢 Press Statement | 30 June 2026

On 30 June 2026, Lawyers for Human Rights acting on behalf of Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia - KAAX, released a Joint press statement welcoming the significant outcome achieved in the urgent proceedings before the KwaZulu-Natal High Court.

Following extensive engagements in court on 26 June 2026, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, together with the remaining Respondents, agreed in substance to the relief sought in our draft order relating to the urgent protection of refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and all persons vulnerable to violence.

The commitments secured through these proceedings reaffirm that violence, intimidation, vigilantism and private immigration enforcement have no place in South Africa's constitutional democracy.

We remain committed to advancing the rule of law, protecting vulnerable communities, and ensuring that constitutional rights, dignity and accountability are upheld for everyone living in South Africa.
