Youth Day – 16 June 1976
Youth Day in South Africa commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of thousands of students who took to the streets on 16 June 1976 in Soweto to protest against the apartheid government.
What began as a peaceful demonstration was met with violence, resulting in the deaths and injuries of many young people. Their courage became a turning point in the struggle for freedom and justice, drawing international attention to the injustices of apartheid.
Today, Youth Day serves as a reminder of the power of young people to bring about change. It is a day to honour the legacy of the youth of 1976, reflect on the progress made, and inspire the next generation to lead with courage, purpose, and a commitment to building a better South Africa.
The theme of Youth Day remains clear: the youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow but also the changemakers of today. Today we were privileged to host 500+ youth for a day of love. Thank you to the FTLOM team for entrusting this opportunity to us. We were super blessed to sow into the next generation 🙌 Charishma Pillay
