Their blood contains copper-based hemocyanin (instead of iron-based haemoglobin like ours), which makes it blue and much more efficient at transporting oxygen in cold, low-oxygen environments. When an octopus swims, the two branchial hearts (that pump blood through the gills) shut down, leaving only the systemic heart working. This is one reason why octopuses prefer crawling rather than swimming — it’s less tiring!
