Proving No Load is Too Small for Big Energy Savings: A Butchery’s Success Story

Faced with rising operational costs, the client wanted to explore ways to save energy and improve reliability. We started with a simple trial on island freezers and display fridges, installing just one ABB variable speed drive (VSD) to begin with.

The results?

We then rolled out VSDs across the rest of the shop.

So far, this intervention has delivered:

Over 1,100 MWh in total energy savings

More than 21,054 million revolutions — a true testament to the durability and performance of ABB drives

But they didn’t stop there. The butchery also implemented:
📍 Full LED lighting retrofit
📍 VSDs on meat mills, saving thousands on blade wear and energy
📍 Bitzer compressors with VSDs enabling rapid cooling by increasing speed during loading
📍 ABB PCS100 ESS for demand-side management and diesel cost savings

Together, these steps have transformed their energy profile, cut costs, and boosted operational efficiency — all while supporting sustainability goals.
