When I turned back I realized that we had already gone far from the bank of the river. I wrapped my arms around my chest, shielding myself from the cold breeze and seeking warmth. The man looked at me and chuckled.

"Are you cold?'

"Yes."

"The waters are usually cold at night. You should have brought a sweater."

I told him I had one in my bag and that I was fine. He nodded his head and kept paddling.

"Is this your first time here?"

"Yes. I came for a burial. It is my first time."

He nodded again.

He told me how he plans to move to Lagos in the near future and how he would make money and take his family along with him.

I told him it was a good idea.

Suddenly, we heard something hit the under of the canoe.

We shuddered.

The man just watched.

"It is nothing bad. Just fishes."

I tightened my eyes and said a short prayer in my heart. When I opened them, I saw spirits in the form of dew. I saw them in human figures walking on the surface of the water.

I looked closely and discovered the dew I had seen was taking shape gradually into a strange being.

The man noticed I was staring at something and quickly asked.

"What are you looking at? What did you see."

"Spirits are here."

"I told you the water is full of spirits. So you can see them?"

He asked.

I told him I have the rare ability to see and communicate with spirits. I also told him I see ghosts as well. But the spirit I was seeing was not a ghost but a demonic one.

I saw spirits with scales on their body suddenly appear. One of these spirits I saw had one eye located at the center of its belly. It had no teeth and was floating on the surface of the eater. That was strange to me.

When I looked ahead, I saw yet another one. This one was the biggest of all the water spirits I had seen. It was standing right in front of our canoe.
