I absolutely love bold pops of colour in a home. It has the immediate ability to make me smile, and I feel it adds a great deal of character to a room. It also conveys a distinct message. Sadly though, most people avoid using colour as they are afraid of it.
And I understand! It can be intimidating when you are not sure how to apply it. Or you are weary of the outcome and wasting money if it goes wrong.
So to help you, here are a few of my basic guidelines that many designers use:
• I generally keep the larger items neutral and add bolder colours selectively. Hereby I mean items that would be expensive to replace like furniture, curtains or fitted carpets. I bring in pops of colour through rugs, lamps, scatter cushions and throws. An all beige or grey room comes to life with a drizzle of colour.
• Bold wallpapers are another popular trend. They have the ability to change a room completely.
• Paint is the cheapest and quickest way to brighten up a space. It creates a totally different feel to a room.
• When you bring in a colour, repeat it. For example, use it on a scatter cushion, and repeat it on the lamp in the corner.
• To really make it pop, bring in the opposite of the colour. Hang a tomato red chandelier and use an olive green rug on the floor. The contrast makes it stand out more.
• For the more adventurous, a striking set of curtains, occasional chair or headboard can give life to any tired room.
At the end of the day, it depends on the look you are after and how adventurous you want to be. The grey & beige trend that's been around for the last 8 or 10 years is a safe option. But I miss bright colours and busy patterns. They make me happy! So I've decided that I would much rather be cooking in a cheerful space that makes me smile than a safe one. Life is short, use the colours, enjoy your home and have fun!

February kicked off with a grasscloth wallpaper that we are importing for my favourite project in Hyde Park. In addition to this we are starting the second phase of our corporate renovation in Camperdown. I love all the creativity!
