MUNICIPALITY INTENSIFIES ACTION AGAINST ELECTRICITY THEFT

Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality has embarked on a campaign to disconnect illegal electricity connections across the municipality, with the aim of improving power supply reliability and strengthening revenue collection. The operation was held at Masakaneng Ward 14, where municipal teams successfully removed illegal connections and ensured compliance with electricity regulations.

Illegal electricity connections have been identified as a major contributor to the municipality’s growing Eskom debt, as many residents consume electricity without payment. These unlawful connections also pose serious safety risks, including house fires and loss of life, as they are often carried out by unqualified individuals.

The Senior Manager responsible for Infrastructure Services said illegal connections and tampering with electricity infrastructure resulted in the Municipality exceeding the maximum electricity supply demand, leading to load reduction and financial penalties from Eskom.

He further stated that overloading caused by illegal connections often led to transformer explosions, leaving communities without electricity and posing serious safety risks that may result in loss of life.

Residents found with illegal electricity connections or bridged meters were disconnected, fined reconnection fees, and charged additional costs for damaged meters and infrastructure.

The Municipality urged residents to refrain from illegal electricity activities and to work together in protecting public infrastructure and ensuring sustainable service delivery.

The Municipality further expressed appreciation to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Municipal Wardens for their support and cooperation during the operation, which contributed to its smooth and successful ex*****on.
