BRACE FOR IMPACT: Massive Fuel Price Hikes Coming May 6th

Despite the National Treasury extending the fuel levy relief, South Africans are facing a major economic shock next week. Analysts warn that the relief—R3/litre for petrol and R3.93/litre for diesel—won’t be enough to cushion the blow of rising global costs.

Independent Economist Elize Kruger has highlighted a staggering cumulative increase over April and May:

Petrol: Expected to rise by another R2.00 per litre on Wednesday, May 6th. This brings the total two-month increase to roughly R5.00/litre.

Diesel: Expected to rise by another R3.60 per litre on May 6th. Combined with April's massive jump, diesel will be up by a total of R11.00/litre in just two months.

This isn't just about the cost of filling up your tank. Experts warn this will trigger a widespread price shock across the country:

Inflation Spike: Inflation could average up to 4.6% if these prices stay high.

Food Prices: With diesel being the backbone of logistics and farming, expect the cost of groceries to climb.

Transport Costs: Public transport and delivery fees are likely to see upward pressure.

"This remains a notable shock to the economy." — Elize Kruger, Independent Economist
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to be the primary driver behind these soaring global oil prices.

Heavy rain and strong winds are affecting parts of Limpopo causing localized flooding, infrastructure damage, and service disruptions.

Disaster teams have been placed on high alert and are working with municipalities to assess damage and assist affected communities.

The Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) MEC Basikopo Makamu has urged residents to remain cautious, avoid flooded roads, limit travel, and follow official updates.

Authorities say further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
