Our Coordinator and Programmes Officer, recently had the opportunity to connect with Refiloe Harris, Chairperson of the Safe Abortion Alliance of Southern Africa (SAASA), during a visit to Lesotho.
Refiloe, who also work with SheHive, is deeply engaged in GBV prevention, advancing access to safe abortion and feminist community work. The exchange offered an encouraging glimpse into the strength of regional organising and the shared priorities across our movements.
As SRJC, we are excited about deepening our connections in Lesotho and expanding feminist action across Southern Africa.

Today marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence under the global UNITE theme. In South Africa, GBVF remains a daily lived experience for far too many - a sad reminder that our work cannot be confined to a 16-day period. As SRJC, we enter these 16 days by naming what survivors have always known:
GBVF is sustained by the very systems meant to protect us; harmful laws and policies, policing failures, stigma in health settings, lack of access to SRHR, and the ongoing violence faced by s*x workers, LGBTQIA+ people, adolescents, migrants, and persons with disabilities.
With GBVF rates remaining unacceptably high across Africa, advocacy remains one of the most powerful tools for systemic change.
If we are to truly UNiTE, our fight must go beyond awareness.
We must confront the institutions that enable violence, challenge the policies that criminalise and exclude, and build feminist, community-led solutions that centre those most impacted.
The work doesn’t end on Day 16. It never has.
SRJC remains committed to pushing for justice every single day - through advocacy, policy influence, and collective feminist movement-building.

It’s time to - and advance action on AUCEVAWG.
As South Africa deepens its response to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), we are reminded that justice must be inclusive; reaching those most often left behind.
The S*xual & Reproductive Justice Coalition (SRJC), in partnership with ISLA and SANAC Women’s Sector, will convene a National Information Session on the African Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women (CEVAWG).
This dialogue will explore how CEVAWG can strengthen the intersection between health, law, and human rights, addressing violence in the lives of women, adolescents, s*x workers, persons with disabilities, and people living with HIV.
Because advancing justice means seeing - and serving - every woman and girl in her full context.
