National Science Month is a reminder that science belongs to everyone. But belonging requires access, and access requires intention.

IkamvaYouth and Sizanani work with learners from under-resourced communities across South Africa, helping them access further education and build futures they may not have thought possible.

DIPLOMICS' partnership with these organisations is an expression of what we believe research infrastructure should be - not just a platform for science, but a resource for the country it belongs to.

The 1KSA catalogue now includes four ant species, each sequenced using Oxford Nanopore Technology and contributed by Dr Charlene Janion-Scheepers and her team at the University of Cape Town.

Ants are among the most ecologically significant insects on the planet. In South Africa's fynbos alone, they are primary seed dispersers, shaping the regeneration of one of the world's most biodiverse plant kingdoms. Sequencing them builds the genomic foundation needed to understand and protect those relationships over time.
