Trucking takes on a feminine twist: Part 2

This Women’s Month we are celebrating the fearless female truckers and fleet owners who challenge gender stereotypes and bring hope, education and their own unique attributes to the trucking and transport industry. In this post we will discuss some corporations and organisations offering women in trucking the much-needed resources to further their careers in the industry.

The Commercial Transport Academy, in collaboration with Women In Trucking Africa, offer courses to women in trucking, logistics and transport to equip them with the necessary skills in order to facilitate them with entrepreneurial ventures. The programs also offer career placements, funding and business development. The CTA also collaborates with UD Trucks South Africa, to further their Ultimate Women Program, a development program focusing on training, educating and uplifting women in the transport industry. The program is a testament to the company’s commitment to actively partake in socio-economic transformation that bridges gender gaps.

The Women Inspiring Women to Lead in Transport initiative, in partnership with the CTA and Hollard Insurance, aims to empower women in the trucking and logistics industry, one they believe reflects the least female representation. The program not only trains women in terms of physical skills, but also equips them with the knowledge surrounding personal budgeting, gender-based violence, HIV and Aids, and harassment in the workplace. In addition, women also learn the relevant business skills to aid them in accessing the market network. The initiative has been launched in Gauteng and Cape Town since 2022 and has been supported by the Volvo Group (through their Iron Women Group program) and Onelogix-Trucklogix.

By engaging both the private sector and organisations with training and education in mind, gender barriers and stereotypes can be bridged, allowing more women to enter the transport and logistics industry. The inclusion of female drivers and owners opens a new market and skilled labour force, but also transforms society and an industry for the better.
