Do you know where the Birthday Cake tradition started?

I’m sure you will agree that no birthday is complete without some cake – it makes turning another year older more bearable. But where did this tradition come from?

In ancient Greece they honoured the Ancient Greek moon goddess, Artemis with a round cake and candles - the round cake was meant to look like the moon and the candles on top of the cake gave off light to imitate the moon.

It wasn’t until the middle ages that the “birthday” cake found its true calling when our German friends celebrated children’s birthdays with a cake and candles, one for each year they had lived and an extra for the year to come – this was known as a Kinderfeste. This is where the formal birthday tradition of making wishes and eating cake originated.

And as this tradition grew and evolved, cakes were not just used for Birthday’s but for all types of special events & celebrations! All we can say is thank you to our Greek & German friends for starting this awesome tradition!
