Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket, effective immediately. The Lord’s Test vs England was his 378th and final match for New Zealand.
After nearly 16 years, he leaves as NZ’s highest run-scorer across formats with 19,346 runs and 48 centuries.

He captained NZ to the 2019 ODI World Cup final, 2021 T20 World Cup final, and the inaugural World Test Championship title in 2021.
“Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms,” Williamson said.
A modern great bows out. Thank you, Kane 👑
JOE ROOT NAMED ENGLAND INTERIM CAPTAIN FOR 2ND TEST!
Joe Root has been appointed England’s interim captain for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval, starting June 17.
The change comes as the ECB investigates regular captain Ben Stokes and pacer Gus Atkinson over an incident at a London nightclub after the Lord’s Test. Both players have “not been made available for selection” while the investigation is ongoing.
Reports state Stokes and Atkinson breached the team’s midnight curfew, a rule introduced in January after alcohol-related incidents on winter tours. The pair were at a London nightclub until early hours of Monday, June 8. The incident also involved Saracens rugby player Totua Auvaa, who reportedly injured an ECB security officer.
England have made two changes for the Oval Test. Jordan Cox comes in as wicketkeeper-batter, while Jofra Archer returns to the XI after being rested post-IPL.
Root will lead England for the 65th time in Tests, the most by any Englishman. He has 27 wins, 26 losses and 11 draws as captain. England lead the 3-match series 1-0 after a 115-run win at Lord’s.
