This family portrait was commissioned to honour his father, the gentleman in the centre of the group.

He's surrounded by his family, proud soga'imiti.
And I painted them against a background depicting their own family land.

It's about Samoan men and their connections to family, traditional tatau, and their land.

It's a different type of portrait.
I don't paint faces because I want to highlight the relationships, body positions, fabrics etc.

Faces are too dominant and draw all the attention.
The viewer is immediately excluded.

But the faceless portraits I paint are more accessible to everyone, and the diffused focus has more space to notice artistic techniques and colours and backgrounds.
