🔔Important Update: Adoptions in Samoa & New Zealand Law🔔

The Samoa District Court has issued an important update regarding adoption applications involving New Zealand citizens or residents. Below is the key information you need to know.

New Zealand has temporarily changed its adoption laws (effective 18 September 2025), meaning most overseas adoptions by New Zealand citizens or residents — including those in Samoa — are no longer automatically recognised for NZ citizenship or visas.

What this means:
A Samoan adoption may still be granted and is legally binding in Samoa.
However, the child may not be able to live with you in New Zealand.
The Samoa District Court has made it clear that adoption orders cannot be undone / discharged later just because NZ immigration or citizenship is refused.
Adoptive parents remain permanently responsible, regardless of NZ outcomes.

These NZ law changes are expected to remain in place until at least 1 July 2027, and the outcome of government discussions is still uncertain.
