THE MEN THAT BROKE GERONIMO"S BACK:
These are Apache scouts, and they were a curse on Geronimo. Before General Crook hired them, the US Army chased the Chiricahuas for months on end, without even a single sighting. They were always one day ahead of the Army. Apache warriors were hard on horses; pushed them to the limit. If their horses fell from exhaustion, a hungry warrior would cut a slice out of the animal, roast it and continue on foot.
The scouts turned the tide against Geronimo. They knew everything about him, the terrain, hidden caches, every water hole and supply caves between Arizona, New Mexico and the Sierra Madres in Mexico. When they pursued their warrior brothers, it was known to them beforehand exactly where the fugitives would go. Meanwhile, looking at this scene, I can tell that one set of hoof-prints was from a shod pony, so imagine how much more the kneeling scout is able to decipher. No Apache Nantan stayed in the field longer than Geronimo, except for the iconic Nana, who prosecuted raids in Mexico and Arizona well into his 80"s.
In the end, those scouts made it impossible for him to recruit new warriors from the reservations like the old days. In the summer of 1886, the pickings reached an all time low. The most famous Apache that ever lived finally threw in the towel on September 4, 1886. The Chiricahua Apache nantan Goyatle (Geronimo), ended his career on a somber note but even so, he led 19 warriors against 5,000 troops (1/4 of the US Army) and 500 Indian scouts, with no losses. He would spend the rest of his life as a POW, banished from Arizona forever.

"Warriors are not what you think of as warriors. The warrior is not someone who fights, because no one has the right to take another life. The warrior, for us, is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, the children, the future of humanity."
