Amongst 60 US pedestrian __________(1), US-19 in New Port Richey, Florida topped the list.

Pedestrian fatalities in the US have been _______(2) in the past decades, as road infrastructures favours cars above all else. And nowhere is that more clear than right here.

Car culture is visible everywhere. Along US-19, drivers are moving fast. The posted limit speed on this stretch is 45 miles per hour. But driving speeds appear to be much faster than that.

A street design report shows that drivers can acquire a wide ________(3) vision when travelling up to 15 miles per hour, which minimises the risk of fatality to 2%. In contrast, drivers travelling over 40 miles per hour will have their vision narrowed, which requires more room to stop and thus increases the fatality risk to 85%.

At its widest, US-19 _________(4), allowing cars to move faster if stuck in a single lane. The road is straight, and there are no curves that would _____ drivers to take it slow.

Businesses along US-19 like ________(5) with parking lots in between, support a car-first fast driving environment. Billboards displayed up high for an audience of fast drivers rather than at human scale.

There is an alternative route but it’s so far that it may encourage risky ________(12), which means to cross at a location with no signal. The more people have to wait at crosswalks, the more they are _________(13) to cross before the signal. They also have to traverse the length of the eight lanes, which becomes more treacherous when there is less light.

On US-19, there are not many pedestrians. Florida officials are trying to improve this stretch of US-19, by reducing speed limits, adding more crosswalks and lights, and delaying green light to _________(14).

They may also add _______(15) here to get people off the road entirely, more people on foot, more people slowing down, and more lives to be saved.
