Did you know that next to Crow territory lived a little-known tribe called the Atsina, or the Northern Gros Ventre, who called themselves A’aninin—“the White People” or “the People of the Dawn”? Although they are rarely mentioned today, they were an important presence on the prairies of what is now Montana and the lands surrounding the Milk River.
The A’aninin shared territory and hunting routes with the Crow for centuries. Although they spoke an Algonquian language—related to that of the Arapaho—their culture had features in common with other Plains tribes: they lived in tipis, followed the great bison herds, and relied on hunting and trade for survival. Their relationship with the Crow was complex: some periods were marked by trade and coexistence, while others saw tensions over the control of hunting routes.
Despite their lower historical profile compared to other tribes, the A’aninin left a deep mark on the region. Their knowledge of the land, their spiritual ceremonies, and their nomadic way of life formed part of the cultural mosaic that shaped the Great Plains. Today, although their population is small, they continue to preserve their language and identity on the Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana.
