IICAS

On May 7, 2026, a Career Day was held at the Silk Road International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage, with the participation of the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS).
As part of the event, students and graduates of the university were introduced to the activities of specialized organizations and opportunities for professional development in the fields of science, tourism development, culture, and the preservation of historical and cultural heritage.
A presentation on the activities of IICAS, its ongoing international projects, and the institute’s areas of work was delivered by IICAS specialists Maftuna Makhmudova and Nigora Turaeva. Particular attention was paid to the issues of studying, preserving, and promoting the historical and cultural heritage of Central Asia, as well as to the prospects for engaging young professionals in research activities.

7 мая 2026 года в Международном университете туризма и культурного наследия «Шёлковый путь» состоялся День карьеры, в котором принял участие Международный институт центральноазиатских исследований (МИЦАИ).
В рамках мероприятия студентам и выпускникам университета была представлена информация о деятельности профильных организаций и возможностях профессионального развития в сферах науки, развития туризма, культуры и сохранения историко-культурного наследия.
С презентацией о деятельности МИЦАИ, реализуемых международных проектах и направлениях работы института выступили специалисты института Махмудова Мафтуна и Тураева Нигора. Особое внимание было уделено вопросам изучения, сохранения и популяризации историко-культурного наследия Центральной Азии, а также перспективам вовлечения молодых специалистов в научно-исследовательскую деятельность.

The 40th issue of the IICAS Bulletin has been published

The main section, “Cultural Studies”, opens with an article by Alisher Ikramov (Uzbekistan) titled “The Sociocultural Significance of Shared Heritage in Central Asia”. This topical theme is further developed by Doctor of Philosophy Erkin Baidarov (Kazakhstan) in his article “The Formation of Regional Identity in Central Asia in the Context of Political and Social Construction: Opportunities and Prospects”. Elena Tsareva, Leading Researcher at the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has published her new study “Regular and Irregular Techniques of Symmetrical Knotting in the Culture of Pastoral Tribes from the 4th Century to the Early 20th Century”, devoted to one of the fundamental and still unresolved issues in the history of pile weaving. The article by doctoral candidate Gulnara Zholdasbaeva (Uzbekistan), “Marriage Rituals of the Karakalpaks in the Context of Heroic Epic”, is based on the analysis of epic narratives “Alpamysh”, “Koblan”, “Kyrk Kyz”, as well as on the works of a number of scholars who have studied Karakalpak ethnography. Igor Pankov, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, proposes a research perspective for analyzing sacred space within the framework of the spatial turn in the humanities. This is presented in his new article “Display Sacredness: The Transformation of Muslim Shrines in Contemporary Uzbekistan (on the Example of the Mausoleum of Yusuf Hamadani)”. Doctor of Historical Sciences Ashirbek Muminov (Kazakhstan) further develops this theme in his essay “Giants in the Sacred Culture of Central Asia”. Professor Shamsiddin Kamoliddin, Doctor of Historical Sciences at Oriental University (Tashkent), dedicates his article to the well-known Bashkir historian and theologian Sheikh Murad Ramzi (1855–1934), the author of a substantial work written in Arabic on the history of the Turkic peoples of Eurasia. In the article “Bukharan Betolmin”, Candidate of Historical Sciences Elizaveta Nekrasova (Uzbekistan) presents her field materials on the funerary practices of Bukharan Jews. Doctor of Historical Sciences Tatiana Yemelyanenko (Russia) has published a collection of dolls and attributes of traditional Uzbek puppet theatre preserved in the Russian Ethnographic Museum. Collected in the early 20th century, this collection most fully reflects the features of this type of Central Asian folk art. In his new article, Russian researcher Dmitry Miloserdov writes about the history of collecting Eastern weapons in Europe from the 15th century, as well as about weapons and armor from the khanates of Central Asia collected by subjects of the Russian Empire in the 19th century.

In the section “Historiography Issues ”, readers will find an article by Vadim Alyokshin, Senior Researcher at the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, titled “The Mosaic of Archaeological Cultures of Central Asia (Neolithic to Early Iron Age)”, as well as a biographical essay by Devin DeWeese, Honorary Professor at Indiana University (Bloomington, USA), dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his teacher, one of the world’s leading historians of Islamic Central Asia, Yuri Bregel.

Основной раздел «Исследования культуры» открывает статья Алишера Икрамова (Узбекистан) «Социокультурная значимость общего наследия в Центральной Азии». Эту актуальную тему продолжает доктор философских наук Еркин Байдаров (Казахстан) в статье «Формирование региональной идентичности Центральной Азии в контексте политического и социального конструирования: возможности и перспективы». Ведущий научный сотрудник Музея антропологии и этнографии им. Петра Великого (Кунсткамера) Российской академии наук Елена Царева опубликовала свое новое исследование «Регулярные и иррегулярные техники симметричного узловязания в культуре скотоводческих племен IV–начала XX в.», посвященное одному из кардинальных и до сих пор не решённых вопросов из истории ворсового ткачества. Статья докторанта Гулнары Жолдасбаевой (Узбекистан) «Брачные обряды каракалпаков в контексте героического эпоса» базируется на анализе эпических сказаний «Алпамыс», «Коблан», «Кырык кыз», а также трудов рядов учёных, исследовавших каракалпакскую этнографию. Старший научный сотрудник Института востоковедения Российской академии наук Игорь Панков предложил исследовательскую перспективу анализа сакрального пространства в логике пространственного поворота (spatial turn) в гуманитарных науках. Об этом его новая статья «Витринная сакральность: трансформация мусульманских святынь в современном Узбекистане (на примере мазара Юсуфа Хамадани)». Доктор исторических наук Аширбек Муминов (Казахстан) фактически развивает эту тему в эссе «Великаны в сакральной культуре Центральной Азии». Профессор Университета Ориентал (г. Ташкент), доктор исторических наук Шамсиддин Камолиддин посвятил свою статью известному башкирскому историку и богослову шейху Мураду Рамзи (1855–1934), который является автором написанного на арабском языке объемного труда, посвященного истории тюрков Евразии. В статье кандидата исторических наук Елизаветы Некрасовой (Узбекистан) «Бухарский бетольмин» представлены ее полевые материалы о погребальной практике бухарских евреев. Доктор исторических наук Татьяна Емельяненко (Россия) опубликовала коллекцию кукол и атрибутов традиционного узбекского кукольного театра, которая хранится в собрании Российского этнографического музея. Она была собрана в начале ХХ века и является наиболее полно отражающей особенности этого вида среднеазиатского народного искусства. Российский исследователь Дмитрий Милосердов в новой статье пишет об истории коллекционирования восточного оружия в Европе начиная с XV века, а также оружия и доспехов из ханств Средней Азии подданными Российской империи в XIX веке.

В разделе «Вопросы историографии» читатель найдет статью старшего научного сотрудника Института истории материальной культуры Российской академии наук Вадима Алёкшина «Мозаика археологических культур Центральной Азии (неолит ‒ ранний железный век)» и биографический очерк почётного профессора Университета Индианы, г. Блумингтон, США Девина Ди Уиса к 100-летию его учителя, одного из ведущих мировых историков исламской Центральной Азии Юрия Брегеля.

Завершает номер традиционный раздел «Хроника».
