​The Rigging Process
​The climber isn't just cutting a branch; they are managing its descent using a system of ropes and pulleys.
​The Cut: The climber uses a chainsaw to make a relief cut (usually a notch) followed by a back cut. This dictates exactly where the branch will hinge and break.
​The Hinge: Notice how the branch doesn't just fall straight down. The wood left between the notch and the back cut acts as a hinge, steering the branch in the desired direction.
​The Control Line: There is a rope attached to the branch being cut. This rope goes up to a block (pulley) higher in the tree and then down to a ground person.
​Why It "Floats"
​When the branch breaks away, it doesn't plummet because the ground person is holding the other end of the rigging rope. By applying tension or slowly "letting it run" through a friction device at the base of the tree, they can lower the heavy limb with total precision.
​Safety and Physics
​Drop Zone: The rigging ensures the branch stays clear of the white vinyl fence and the house structure.
​Load Management: The "block" (the pulley at the top) redirects the force. The tree itself has to be strong enough to handle the sudden "shock load" when the branch drops and the rope catches it.
