Why is my High G sharp?

High G is one of the first notes pipers notice drifting sharp, but the cause isn't always the chanter.

Common reasons include:

• Too much blowing pressure – High G is very sensitive to pressure changes and will often sharpen before other notes. Don't blow the reed past its pressure limit.

• A reed that's too easy – Easier reeds can be more prone to sharp top-hand notes.

• A reed that's still settling in – New reeds often change pitch as they break in.

• Moisture changes – A reed that's too dry can affect note balance throughout the scale. Pipers often overdo the ways of controlling moisture in their bagpipe and then make the reed bone dry which gives you a sharp high G and sharper unstable F too.

• Chanter setup – Sometimes if the reed is sitting too deep in the reed seat this will have the top hand notes sharper than the bottom hand, especially High G.

Before reaching for more tape, make sure your pressure is steady and your reed is settled. Many "sharp High G" problems are actually pressure, bagpipe set up or reed issues rather than tuning issues.

A sharp High G is often a symptom—not the problem itself.

The Scottish tradition continues...

Apparently no statue is safe from a traffic cone.

The cone is temporary.

Good tone is forever.

All the best to Scotland Wednesday night!
